Gali School Program
The integrated program on education and health provides holistic development
through need based educational interventions with underprivileged children of 4-8
years of age in the re-settlement slums of Bawana in Delhi. Providing education to
the underprivileged children and mainstreaming is the primary focus areas of the
project. The schools are conducted in the lanes inside the slum area and are known
as Gali schools". Gali schools provide pre-school education to the children along with
extra curricular activities like library classes, music, sports, competitions and
exposure visits. Health care plays an important part of this program. The parents are
involved in the activities of the Gali schools through regular parent teacher meetings.
In these meetings, the issue about the child's performance and their care at home are
discussed.Children with behavioral problems are provided regular counseling. The
program regularly mainstreams the children into the formal educational set up. The
project involves few of the slum community members to be a part of the 'slum school
committee'. To help this committee to perform their role, the project conducts training
sessions for them on various developmental issues concerning children and the community
in general. Prevention of drug abuse, counseling, drug de-addiction and rehabilitation are
some of the other areas of work of the organization.
