Gali Schools

gali
Gali schools were formed to give extremely poor children in the slums of New Delhi a chance to get an education and get off the streets. For many of these youngsters, attending a Gali school is a chance to get away from the trash heaps where their parents have sent them to collect scraps, and into the classroom to learn basic, yet essential, skills in leading a productive life.
Although things like knowing how to read and write as well as learning the dangers of drug addiction and gender discrimination may seem simple, these are some of the most important issues street kids can learn.
At the present moment 1250 students are enrolled in various Gali schools around the city. Among the enrollees are nearly 700 girls, an encouraging number considering all the added dangers and perils young girls face in such volatile environments. One of the most challenging aspects for teachers is making sure their students attend class regularly and stay off the streets.
Besides learning to read, write, add, subtract and other basic skills, the kids at Gali schools also get to participate in sports, dance and drama class, and the very popular class trips. For most of the children, it is the first chance to go around the massive city of New Delhi and visit some of the beautiful and educational sights. Besides regular visits to the library, students went on trips to the zoo, the science center, the museum and several historical spots as well. These trips were enormously popular among the kids.
Another key benefit the kids at Gali schools receive is regular checkups by qualified nurses every two weeks. Besides treating the children for various illnesses, the nurses also educate them and their parents on the importance of health and hygiene. For parents, meetings and involvement in the schools can help them become a part of the community.       So many good things have come out of the Gali schools, but we need your help to continue these incredible successes. Every year these schools need new supplies such as pens, pencils, paper, chalk and several other materials. Money is also needed to pay teachers, doctors and travel arrangements for class trips. Please, help the Gali school tradition continue and donate to the Giving World today.
